Mama's hushpuppies recipe is a southern favorite!
What seafood meal would be complete without hushpuppies? Once you've tried this recipe, I'm sure you'll never want to have seafood again with hushpuppies...shoot...they're so good, you may even want to have the hushpuppies without seafood!
Here's what you'll need:
1 1/2 cups self-rising cornmeal mix
1/2 cup of self-rising flour
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon of Lawry's Seasoning Salt
1 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Oil for deep frying
1/8 cup of bacon grease, melted (you can use vegetable oil here but the bacon grease gives it such a wonderful flavor)
1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
Here's what you need to do:
Heat oil to 350 degrees F.
Mix together the corn meal mix, flour, seasoning salt, pepper. Add the eggs, onions, bacon grease and buttermilk. Mix until well blended.
When the oil is ready, drop your hush puppies into the hot oil using a tablespoon. Flip them over after they begin to brown on the first side. Allow them to brown on all sides flipping several times. Remove from oil when they are a nice golden brown and then drain them on paper towels.
**Note: Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to this recipe for hush puppies if you like your hush puppies a little sweet.
Hush puppies are great with any seafood. I like to dip mine in tartar sauce or cocktail sauce. Yum!
